Welcome to the Bombora Resort
Bombora - A Special Piece of Coolangatta's History
The original Bombora Holiday Lodge was first known as the "Tarzana Motel", and was constructed in 1949 on the corner of Dutton Street & Marine Parade, Coolangatta. The complex was built for a Mr Whitehouse - owner and manufacturer of the popular adhesive glue "Tarzan Grip".
In 1968 a prominent local businessman Bill Stafford purchased Tarzana's and changed the name to the "Bombora Holiday Lodge".
In this time the Bombora Holiday Lodge was a market leader and is credited as being the first motel in Queensland to have an in-ground swimming pool and rooms with private showers and toilets.
In 1989 when the property was scheduled for demolition to build the Showcase Shopping Centre, the then manager, Mr Leo, determined to retain the Bombora name, purchased the land and built the present day structure where it now stands. In 2003 when Mr Leo retired, he sold the land and business to Mr Smith. In 2016 Mr Smith sold the business to the current owner, a motel operating company, who intends to maintain and further improve the services that Bombora has been providing.
What is a 'Bombora' anyway?
A bombora is an indigenous term for an area of large sea waves breaking over a submerged rock shelf or reef located some distance from the shoreline. If you are a surfer or scuba diver you may know of a Bombora as a "Bombie".
Bombora - Top of the Charts
Bombora also happens to be the title of the first Australian instrumental surf hit to go number one on the charts in 1963. As the Beatles ruled the hit parade in England, the surf music craze rode high on the US & Australian music charts. Written and performed by the Atlantic's, "Bombora" was a smash hit.
